More Than Religion 09/20/2026

Paul and Barnabas walked from town to town with their eyes on something farther than the next crowd. They were not driven by how they felt, and they were not ruled by how people treated them. Religion can form what we believe. It can give us structure. That is not all bad. But when I use the word "religion" today, I mean a system of rules we rely on to keep ourselves safe, comfortable, and feeling right with God. Religion is about management: managing our reputation, managing our risks, and keeping God at a safe, predictable distance. But Paul and Barnabas were living more than a belief they held. Their relationship with Jesus, and their eyes on eternity, were what led them. That is a life with the One who died so that all could have eternal life. If Jesus is that life in us, then yesterday does not get to disciple us. The Holy Spirit, not our feelings, decides whether we stay in a hard place. And the people who watch us can be left a life they can keep. Faith can take root, stand under fire, and even flourish when Jesus is more than a religion we hold, when He is the life we live.
