Offensive Spiritual Warfare

The Shift We Need Tonight

Much of the church is trained to survive spiritual attack. Scripture also calls us to advance. Offensive spiritual warfare is not aggression toward people. It is prayer, proclamation, and obedience that push darkness back and make room for Jesus to reign.

"The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." - 1 John 3:8

Jesus did not come only to help us cope with the enemy. He came to undo the enemy's work. Tonight we agree with that purpose in prayer.

Defensive and Offensive Prayer

Both postures are biblical. Ephesians 6 tells us to put on the armor of God and stand. That is defensive prayer: we hold what Christ has already given us and we refuse to surrender ground. Offensive prayer goes further. It asks Jesus to take new ground in us, in our families, in the church, and in the city.

We need both. Armor without advance becomes a bunker. Advance without armor becomes presumption.

Jericho: A Picture of Offensive Warfare

Joshua 6 is one of the clearest pictures in Scripture of taking ground God's way. Israel did not hide from Jericho. They did not negotiate with Jericho. They walked toward a walled city God had already said was theirs.

The walls were real. The city was shut up. From the ground, the assignment looked impossible. The Lord told Joshua, "See, I have given Jericho into your hand." The gift came before the marching. Then He gave a strange strategy: walk around the city once a day for six days, in silence, with the ark of the covenant at the center. On the seventh day, walk seven times, then shout.

That is offensive spiritual warfare. They advanced. They kept the presence of God in the middle of the procession. They obeyed when the method did not look like a military plan. They did not break the walls with their own hands. When they shouted, the walls fell, and then they went in and took the city.

They did not stand in camp and only pray for protection from Jericho. They put their feet on the ground God had named. Protection mattered. They were consecrated and they followed His order. But the point of the week was not survival. The point was occupation.

"By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days." - Hebrews 11:30

Faith walked. Faith waited. Faith shouted. Then the wall that had looked immovable came down. Tonight we treat the strongholds in front of us the same way. God has already spoken. We walk in agreement with what He has said.

Core Scriptures

Read these slowly. Offensive prayer is not inventing words. It is agreeing with what God has already said.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5. Our weapons are not of the flesh. They have divine power to destroy strongholds, arguments, and every lofty thing raised against the knowledge of God. A stronghold is a fortified lie: a story that has begun to feel truer than Scripture.

Matthew 16:18-19. The church is built on Christ. The gates of hell will not prevail. Gates do not attack; they defend. That means the church is the one moving. Jesus gives His people keys to bind and to loose.

Matthew 11:12. The kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful people lay hold of it. The kingdom is not passive. It presses forward.

Luke 10:19. Jesus gives authority over all the power of the enemy. That authority is His, shared with those who belong to Him. It is not a personality trait and it is not volume.

Colossians 2:15. Christ disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them at the cross. We do not fight for victory. We enforce a victory that already exists.

Ephesians 6:10-18. Be strong in the Lord. Put on the whole armor. Pray at all times in the Spirit. Standing and advancing belong together.

Joshua 1:3, 9 and Joshua 6. Every place the sole of your foot treads I have given you. Be strong and courageous. At Jericho the gift was settled before the walls fell. Occupying the land still required footsteps, obedience, and a shout of faith.

What Offensive Warfare Looks Like

This is practical, not theatrical. These are the ways the church takes ground.

• We proclaim truth where a lie has ruled, whether that lie sits in a mind, a marriage, a church culture, or a city.
• We intercede for people and places by name. Vague prayer rarely breaks a specific stronghold.
• We repent of any agreement we have made with darkness so the enemy loses borrowed ground.
• We bind what heaven has already judged and we loose what heaven has already released. Binding and loosing is agreement with God, not a technique we invent.
• We worship in a way that dethrones fear and names Jesus as Lord over the room and the region.
• We obey after the meeting. Land is taken on foot, not only in a prayer gathering. Jericho did not fall from a distance. They had to walk.

Guardrails

• People are not the enemy. Ephesians 6:12 says we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. We pray for people. We resist the powers that oppress them.
• We do not hunt demons for sport. We follow Jesus and deal with opposition as it appears.
• Authority is in Christ, not in volume, technique, or spiritual résumé.
• The fruit we look for is love, holiness, unity, and the gospel going forward.

Use these as starting points. Pray Scripture. Name names. Stay with a target until you sense a shift or the leader moves the room on.
